Nike sneakers found their way onto skateboarders’ feet ever since street skateboarding has existed. The Blazer, the Bruin, the Air Jordan: they were all originally conceived as basketball shoes, but were loved by skateboarders everywhere for their unintentionally skate-friendly design. In fact, it’s quite funny, when you think about it, that Nike SB only came into being in the early 2000s, decades late to their own party. Case in point: the Air Jordan. One of Nike’s most iconic models, Michael Jordan’s 1985 design was celebrated by skateboarders for its durability. In a time when most designated skate shoes looked like an overrun platypus stuck to a Goodyear tire (looking at you, Airwalk VIC), the Air Jordan was a welcome addition to every skateboarder’s inventory. There have been two Nike SB Air Jordan releases in the past, both helmed by pro skater Lance Mountain, so this drop is technically the third Air Jordan made for skateboarding. At the same time, Nike SB and Jordan Brand’s Air Jordan 1 OG (rolls off the tongue nicely, doesn’t it?) comes in two variations: there’s one model that comes with a LA Lakers color scheme (Nike SB pro Eric Koston’s favorite team) which is designed to wear away with time, revealing a Chicago Bulls color scheme underneath. Then there’s another one, dubbed the “NYC to Paris” colorway, that’s almost completely grey (save for the black Swoosh), turning pink over time. Needless to say, both models will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis, so get your sneaker schedule straight, and start lining down the block to cop these motherfuckers.
