Stüssy: A Brand with a Heritage

South Californian surfer and surfboard manufacturer Shawn Stussy founded his brand Stüssy in the early 1980s. In other words, Stüssy clothing has been around for decades and, unlike other brands that are dug out solely for nostalgia purposes, is still going strong. That’s no surprise: Stüssy t-shirts, hoodies, and accessories are timeless classics that remain as appealing as they were back in the day. Part of it is the brands effort to stay relevant in a fast-moving market: prestigious collaborations such as Stüssy x Nike SB and Stüssy x Dior contribute to the brand’s strong standing in streetwear and in popular culture. Indeed, Stüssy has garnered a cult following among hip hop, skateboarding, and surfing subcultures. Even the notoriously finicky punk subculture has taken a liking to Stüssy, so there’s that.

Why is the logo not a logo?

This brings us to the famous logo, which is actually not a properly designed logo at all: it’s Shawn Stussy’s signature that he used to sign the surfboards he made. The signature’s distinctiveness, however, made it a perfect fit to print on t-shirts, hoodies, and beanies, and to this day remains one of the most recognized logos in all of streetwear. Why the umlaut, though? To fuck with English keyboards for all we know.
